Volunteering and motivation in Norway and Scandinavia

Project period 2014–2017
Project employer Kulturdepartementet, Barne-, likestillings- og inkluderingsdepartementet, Helse- og omsorgsdepartementet, Arbeids- og sosialdepartementet
Project nr. 10023.1

In this thematic area we seeked out the answer to two overarching questions. First, how does broad social change affect the conditions for volunteering? Second, what are the most important explanations for why people volunteer and participate? To what extent is there an untapped potential for increased volunteer participation?

The answer to this question was sought within the realm of four subprojects:

  1. Volunteering in a Scandinavian comparative perspective.

  2. New forms of volunteerism.

  3. Motivation in context.

  4. The potential for increased participation in the population.

The project made use of different types of data and methods, such as surveys, panel data and case studies.
