“NordForsk has awarded 41,8 MNOK for two Nordic Centres of Excellence (NCoEs) under the programme Solving the Gender Paradox. Both of the centres will contribute to achieve knowledge about how the Nordic countries can overcome the gender imbalance in research and innovation.
The Nordic countries are at the top of the European and global gender equality indices. However, within the research and innovation area, the Nordic countries only perform at a European average. NordForsk’s initiative “Solving the Gender Paradox: Gender Gaps in the Nordic Research and Innovation Area” is a response to this problem and paradox.”
Institute for Social Research has now been awarded one of the two centers, under the name NORDICORE – Nordic Centre for Research on Gender Equality in Research and Innovation (NORDICORE).
The researchers Mari Teigen and Liza Reisel, both from CORE and Institute for Social Research, will head the centre, respectively as leader and deputy lead.
They underline the five overarching objectives of the new Nordic Centre of Excellence:
– The first aim is assessing the impact of equality policies already implemented in Nordic academic institutions. Secondly, we will identify barriers both internal and external to research organizations impeding gender equality and inclusion. The third objective consists of understanding challenges to gender equality in research and innovation within the larger labour market contexts in the Nordic countries.
Fourthly, we aim to bring words to action by engaging stakeholders at all stages of the research, which we already have experience with from our well established Centre for Research on Gender Equality – CORE. Last, but not least, the fifth aim of NORDICORE is to encourage knowledge exchange among national and international experts, researchers, students, policy makers, stakeholders, managers, equality workers and other interested parties through a range of activities such as workshops, seminars, conferences and researcher education, says Mari Teigen and Liza Reisel.
Also accompanying the new Nordic Centre of Excellence is an Advisory Board, consisting of leading international scholars in the field.
